Darkside Overland — FAQ & Business Policies
Partnership terms, review policy, and sponsored content guidelines.
Business Inquiries
Darkside Overland works with select brands whose products align with our audience of overlanders, off-grid adventurers, and vehicle-based campers. We offer two distinct partnership lanes — product reviews and sponsored content — each governed by its own policy below.

- Off-grid power — solar, battery, and portable power stations
- 3D-printed accessories and aftermarket vehicle mods
- Rooftop tents, campers, and shelter systems
- Navigation, communication, and off-grid tech

What we don’t do
- We do not accept payment in exchange for favorable reviews. See Review Policy below.
- We do not publish sponsored content without clear FTC-compliant disclosure.
- We do not work with brands whose products or practices we believe would harm our audience.
- We do not accept review requests for products outside the scope listed above.
Product Review Policy
Our reviews are intended to help viewers make informed purchasing decisions. The following principles are non-negotiable.
Editorial independence
- We do not accept payment in exchange for reviews. No money or items of value beyond the review unit itself may change hands as part of a review agreement. Requesting a paid review will result in your company being permanently declined for future partnerships.
- Where a review unit is provided free of charge, this is clearly disclosed in the video and description.
- The review unit must be equivalent to what a regular customer would receive. If we suspect a unit has been specially prepared to earn a favorable review, this will be disclosed in the video and may result in the review being cancelled.
- When we encounter problems with a product, we may first attempt to resolve them the way any customer would — user manuals, support documentation, community forums — before contacting the company. This keeps the review experience representative of what real customers can expect.
Honesty and permanence
- Problems encountered during testing will be included in the final review, even if they are later resolved. If an issue was clearly an anomaly, that context will be made clear.
- Once a review is agreed upon, a poor product experience is not grounds for the review to be cancelled or pulled. Customers deserve to see honest assessments of products that did not perform as advertised.
- If we make a verified factual error in a review, we will re-edit or replace the video at the company’s request and note the correction in the description.
- Darkside Overland is not liable for loss of sales, investment, reputation, or other commercial outcomes resulting from an honest review. Product quality is the manufacturer’s responsibility.
Timeline and communication
Darkside Overland is a part-time operation. Reviews are scheduled around work, family, and other commitments.
- Typical review turnaround is 4–8 weeks from receipt of the unit to publication, depending on product complexity. Power stations, solar gear, and other equipment that requires real-world testing across multiple trips may take longer.
- Issues requiring replacement components or firmware updates will extend the timeline.
- Unless a deadline is explicitly agreed upon in writing, no specific publication date is guaranteed.
- Companies are welcome to check in on progress and will receive a timely response. We will proactively reach out on any major issues to seek direction.
Review process — physical products
A typical review covers (but is not limited to):
- Summary of advertised features and capabilities, including permitted use of manufacturer-supplied images and marketing copy.
- Unboxing, assembly, and initial setup.
- Evaluation of included instructions, tools, spare parts, and digital materials.
- Performance testing against advertised specifications.
- Real-world testing in relevant overlanding, off-grid, or vehicle-based scenarios.
- Build quality and durability assessment.
- Analysis of ongoing costs — consumables, accessories, service.
- Evaluation of manufacturer support, documentation, and community resources.
Review summaries — ensuring fairness
- Every review includes a clear summary of positives and negatives.
- Performance is assessed against both advertised claims and, where possible, direct experience with competing products. We avoid speculating about competitors we have not personally used.
- Review units are evaluated in the context of their price point and target customer.
- Our opinion is formed on the merits of the product, regardless of whether it was purchased or provided for review.
Publishing and monetization
- Company name, contact name, and product name may appear in video titles, thumbnails, descriptions, tags, and metadata.
- Product images and company logos may be used in thumbnails and promotional materials.
- Affiliate links to retailers where the product is sold may be included in video descriptions, consistent with standard industry practice.
- Review videos are monetized via YouTube advertising unless the company explicitly requests demonetization before the review is agreed upon.
By proceeding with the review process, the company agrees to all terms in this policy.
Sponsored Content Policy
Separate from our product review program, Darkside Overland offers sponsored content partnerships for qualified brands. Sponsored content is a commercial arrangement in which we produce and publish promotional material on behalf of a partner. It is explicitly and clearly labeled as such — both in our platform’s native disclosure tools and through on-screen, in-description, and verbal callouts consistent with FTC Endorsement Guides.
How sponsored content differs from a review
- Sponsored content is commissioned and paid for. Reviews are not.
- Sponsored content focuses on how a product performs in real overlanding use cases — not exhaustive feature-by-feature evaluation.
- Sponsored content may include messaging and talking points agreed upon with the partner, within the limits below.
- We will not label or frame sponsored content as a “review.” The two are kept deliberately distinct.
What we will and won’t do
We will:
- Disclose the commercial relationship clearly and prominently, per FTC requirements.
- Work with partners on messaging, talking points, and key features to highlight.
- Integrate products authentically into real overlanding and off-grid scenarios.
- Provide usage rights for a defined period and scope, as negotiated per agreement.
We will not:
- Make product claims we have not personally verified.
- Disparage competitors, or promote a product by attacking another brand.
- Omit material safety, reliability, or compatibility issues we encounter during testing.
- Accept sponsorship for products we believe are unsafe, misrepresented, or unsuitable for the overlanding audience.
- Transfer editorial control over final edit, tone, or creative execution.
Deliverables and formats
Available sponsored content formats include:
- Dedicated YouTube videos (long-form, product-centric)
- YouTube sponsor integrations (60–90 second segments within existing video content)
- Instagram Reels, feed posts, and Stories
- TikTok short-form video
- Multi-platform bundle packages at discounted rates
- Event coverage and on-site activations (case-by-case)
Rates and terms
- Rate cards are provided to qualified partners on request. Rates vary by deliverable type, platform, usage rights, exclusivity, and campaign scope.
- Standard deliverables include 30-day organic usage rights. Extended usage, paid media usage (running our content as ads), whitelisting, and category exclusivity are quoted separately.
- Campaign scope, timeline, deliverables, and payment terms are agreed in writing before production begins.
- A deposit may be required for first-time partners or campaigns exceeding a defined threshold.
Disclosure
All sponsored content is disclosed through:
- Platform-native paid partnership tags (YouTube “includes paid promotion,” Instagram “Paid partnership,” etc.)
- Clear verbal and/or on-screen disclosure at the start of the content
- Written disclosure in the video or post description
- Affiliate link disclosure where applicable
General FAQs
Where are you located? Can we meet up?
We’re based in North Carolina, but our exact location is kept private. We don’t do meet-and-greets or home visits — no exceptions, sorry.
Are you available for consulting or collaborating on projects?
Darkside Overland is a part-time operation, and consulting opportunities are considered case-by-case. Reach out through the business contact above with details about the project, scope, and timeline.
How did you first get into vehicle-based camping?
As our son reached middle school, we wanted a way for him to experience the outdoors — fishing, camping, wrenching on vehicles — instead of disappearing into video games. That turned into what Darkside Overland is today.
Can you recommend a truck, trailer, or camper for me?
We can share perspective based on our experience, but every overlander has different needs, budgets, and goals. Treat any recommendation as one data point among many.
What advice can you give someone who wants to get into overlanding?
Think carefully about what you actually want to accomplish. An $85,000 build is a lot of hotel nights and rental cars. Consider the cost and space requirements of supplementing a vehicle for sleeping, cooking, water, power, and safety — and whether you have somewhere to store the rig and gear between trips.
