One favorite place for my family is Portsmouth Island, located off the coast of North Carolina, which is a beautiful barrier island whose natural beauty is a stark contrast to its once-bustling commercial life. Home to just 22 residents in the 1920s, Portsmouth Island was a vibrant fishing village and one of the busiest ports on the East Coast. Today, visitors to this charming destination can experience quiet seclusion as they take in sights like old-fashioned homes, lighthouses, and even shipwrecks.
The town is now deserted and only maintained by a group of people, the Friends of Portsmouth Island, who do a great job of preserving the remaining buildings and grounds. The National Park Service, as of this writing, is still not on the island due to storm damage. The island is completely pack-in/pack-out of all items. There is no fresh water or fuel to aid you in the event the ferry does not run due to weather or maintenance.
There are plenty of fun activities for visitors too – go bird watching along nature trails or explore the nearby boat ramp and beaches for swimming and fishing opportunities, and walk about the old village. There is abundant fishing on the island, and you can see many dolphins and the occasional whale at the right time of year. The island is also an International Dark Skies location, so stargazing is amazing with next to no light pollution.
You can get to Portsmouth Island via Morris Marina in Atlantic, North Carolina is an ideal launching pad for Overlanding trips. With its spectacular views and rich history, Portsmouth Island makes an excellent destination for an Overlanding adventure!
